Why the name “Selous”. Well this name is synonymous with the famous hunter and explorer bythe name of Frederick Courteney Selous. As a kid growing up in South Africa, I always had a strong draw to the wilds and the African bush. One day while scouring the books in my fathers library, I found a book called “A HUNTERS WANDERINGS IN AFRICA” written by F.C Selous himself. While reading this book as a youngster, couldn’t have been much morethan 10 or 11 years old, I turned a page and out fell this piece of paper. A piece of history.It was a handwritten letter by F.C Selous himself, dated July 10th, 1901 – an actual hand written letter by Selous himself – and that’s where it all started. You can see pictures of this letter on the front of the site. From that moment on, this name meant a great deal to me.Having grown up and spent most of my life in Africa I’ve come to appreciate goods that are tough, and that last. After becoming licensed to guide safaris in Zambia, I spent a decade and ahalf taking clients on driving and walking safaris in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park. I came to love rugged, tough gear especially leather goods. My goal is to design and bring to life “Built Africa Tough” leather gear that not only looks and feels beautiful, but lasts a lifetime, whilegiving back at the same time to animals that need our help.
